How Did Rwanda Become the Cleanest Country in Africa?

Most people who visit Rwanda for the first time are surprised by how clean the country is. But what led this tiny African country to be known as “the cleanest country in Africa”?

1. Umuganda – Community Clean-Up Day

Rwanda is known for the national practice called Umuganda. On the last Saturday of every month, participation in Umuganda is mandatory for most citizens between ages 18 and 65, unless exempt. People join together to clean streets, plant trees, repair public infrastructure, and promote civic engagement.

2. Ban on Plastic Bags

Back in 2008, Rwanda prohibited the use of plastic bags. This idea came many years before most countries adopted it. Travelers arriving at the airport must leave plastic bags behind. Due to this ban, the amount of waste and pollution fell significantly.

3. Strong Government Policies

The government in Rwanda says that cleanliness and city planning come first. Education and fees for littering are used to stop this behavior. City planning guarantees that public areas like spaces, streets, and markets are properly organized and maintained.

4. Cultural Pride and Discipline

Cleanliness in Rwanda reflects a deep sense of national pride and personal responsibility. Citizens are taught from an early age to care for their environment and respect shared public spaces.
