Can I use credit cards in Rwanda, or is cash preferred?
In Rwanda, both credit cards and cash are accepted. In major cities like Kigali, credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, larger shops and more upscale establishments. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly used cards, though it’s always a good idea to inform the merchant in advance if you plan to pay with a credit card, as not all places may have card payment systems.
However, cash remains essential, particularly if you plan to explore smaller towns, rural areas or local markets where card machines are rare. Rwanda’s currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF) and while some ATMs are available in larger cities, they may charge foreign transaction fees for international cards. It’s best to carry enough cash when venturing outside urban areas to cover small purchases, transport and meals.
To make the most of your trip, consider carrying both cash and a credit card. This way, you’re prepared for any situation. Additionally, for a seamless start to your adventure, you can easily apply for a Rwanda e-Visa through our website. It saves time and gives you peace of mind without visiting the embassy or consulate. The usual processing time is around three days, but we recommend applying at least seven days before your trip to avoid any unforeseen delays.
